What is Fumigation?

Wooden pallet fumigation is a treatment process performed on wood-based products such as wooden pallets to ensure that all pests such as insects have been removed. This process is intended to meet ISPM 15 international safety standards. In general, fumigation can be carried out directly on pallets, wooden crates (wooden boxes), warehouse areas, buildings, containers, ships, and various commodities. To achieve an optimal level of security, the duration of fumigation is set at a minimum of 24 hours with a temperature of not less than 10 degrees Celsius.

Methods of Wooden Pallet Fumigation

There are several types of fumigants that are safe to use for fumigation, namely, PH3 (Phosphine), SF (Sulfuryl Fluoride), and MB (Methyl Bromide). One of the commonly used fumigation methods is to use of the chemical methyl bromide. In the fumigation process, the fumigator uses this chemical because:

  • Good penetration ability
  • The required fumigation time is short
  • Effectively kills various types of pests
  • Relatively easy to apply
  • Suitable for various types of commodities
